The Placenta is AMAZING!

The placenta is INCREDIBLE.

We all know that pregnant folks are growing all the parts to make a new human, but they are *also* growing a temporary organ called the placenta.

What’s the placenta timeline?
⏱️5 weeks - the primitive placenta begins to form
⏱️7 weeks - the umbilical cord has fully formed
⏱️10 weeks - the placenta begins to take over the ovaries’ job of producing pregnancy hormones (estrogen, progesteron, and relaxin)
⏱️12 weeks - the placenta is fully formed and embedded into the uterine wall

In the second trimester, the umbilical cord grows as it passes nutrients to baby.

By the third trimester, the placenta is about 1 inch thick and rests below the sternum.
